How we help...
We have funded an Emergency Food Aid Programme costing on average £100 per month for several years. It has been literally a life saver for Johnson, and many other individuals and families like Johnson, a man from Vellianoor village.
A quote from Tom Sutherland:
"Johnson, Johnson, I'm Johnson... This shout wakens us weekly. Hardly able to walk, nearly blind and armed with a mighty staff, he crosses the river and makes the long trek to The Banyan Tree Centre for emergency food for himself and his family."
In Peroorkada, a suburb of Trivandrum, we work in a very poor urban area. One of our three main activities is to improve the nutrition of extremely poor children, so we provide additional milk and bananas every day in our tuition groups.
Rajaji Nagar is a classroom in the clouds! In a roof top location, our Rajaji Nagar tuition group is in a truly inner city zone; a deprived area in the centre of Trivandrum.
Housing is a mixture of poor huts and government built concrete
tenements. There is overcrowding, high unemployment, parental illiteracy, excessive
use of illicit alcohol (toddy and arrack),
smoking addiction and many other family problems.
Two primary classes, totalling
over 50 children, are held on the flat roof of one of the housing blocks, for
2½ hrs
after each school day, and from 7 to 11am Saturday.
In both Perookada and Rajaji Nagar, we work
with Pastor Sam Kutty who is a long time associate of The
Banyan Tree.
The smallest of gifts makes a HUGE difference.
